The Senior Building Systems Modeling Engineer, designs, develops and maintains Next generation HVAC&R and Buildings System and component Modeling solutions, supporting key strategic areas for the company, to meet the sustainability goals of 1GT CO2e reduction by 2030. The successful candidate will work in a team environment to coordinate with multiple internal global teams and external partners. The role plays an active technology leadership in evaluating new and innovative technologies as they appear for potential commercial value. The successful candidate also improves and standardizes application of digital capabilities across different business units, supporting system level modeling including applications of equipment and controls within buildings and connected grid environment
Core Job Responsibilities (others may be added):



  • Develop and deploy models at the system level, including HVAC equipment, building energy models (BEMs), Distributed Energy Resources (DERs like energy storage, PV, wind etc), and their interaction within the Grid Connected environment.


  • Demonstrate detailed technical understanding of Buildings and Grid Controls, Demand Management, Energy conservation measures (ECMs) principles, and justify the impact on energy savings and CO2e reductions, through the use of models.


  • Develop and implement state-of-the-art physics/data-based system models to enable performance predictions, and transient analyses, supporting key strategic areas like electrification and decarbonization.


  • Participate in long term technology roadmap development discussions and help build new external partnerships for Trane Technologies.


  • Actively look for external funding opportunities in the domain area and provide technical inputs in development of project proposals.


  • Work with internal and external partners in technical execution of long term externally funded R& D projects.


  • Works closely with global team members, cross-functional associates and internal customers in dynamic environment, to understand the implications of modeling results and drive system level optimization and answer critical design questions through modeling results.


  • Lead the evaluation of new and innovative technologies as they appear for potential commercial value, either as disruptive competition or prospective new products or services for the company.


  • Develop and communicate clear understanding of customer requirements and meet or exceed those expectations.


  • Conceptualize & develop project ideas leading to new advanced capability development in related domain areas to keep TT to the leading edge of technology.


  • Network across the organization and externally to identify and communicate opportunities to apply system modeling and simulation to product design, applications and processes.


  • Leads internal strategic projects and reports project progress for quality, deliverables and cost.


  • Overnight Travel - approximately 10%.


    Minimum Qualifications:


    • Masters Degree in Engineering or Building science or equivalent and at least 3 years of modeling and/or simulation experience is required.


    • PhD with an emphasis in Thermodynamic/HVAC/building sciences is a plus.


      Key Competencies:


      • Experience with HVAC systems modeling, Building energy management systems or HVAC equipment and controls required


      • Practical experience of working with MATLAB/Simulink based platforms or Modelica based system modeling is required.


      • Experience with systems optimization desirable.


      • Practical experience of working with any Building Modeling Software such as Energy Plus/TRACE 3D+ preferred.


      • Practical experience in closed-loop control preferred. Experience with multi-variable control desirable.


      • Emphasis in computer programming or related experience desirable. Knowledge of and ability to code in programming languages such as C/C++or Python desirable.


      • Experience and familiarity working in a research-oriented environment preferred.


      • Must be an innovative self-starter capable of setting and meeting goals and deadlines, and of making critical business decisions.


      • Must have proven ability to perform and communicate effectively in a team environment.


      • Knowledge in the areas of Machine learning, Predictive Maintenance and Controls desirable.


      • Deep intellectual curiosity and Industrial awareness. Applying creativity, innovation, advanced approaches, and technologies in performing M&S to advance modelling and simulation capability for the organization.


        Salary:
        From $68,000 - $140,000/yr based on experience
        Disclaimer: This base salary range is based on US national averages. Actual base pay could be a result of seniority, merit, geographic location where the work is performed.
