Job Description Cancer Research Faculty - Gundersen Medical Foundation DepartmentMedical Research Contact LocationLa Crosse Schedule/Shift8 Hour Shift, Days FTE1 FTE Benefit EligibleYes Temporary PositionNo Job Details Gundersen Medical Foundation is seeking a Senior Research Scientist who will join the faculty of the Kabara Cancer Research Institute (KCRI) to develop and lead an independent research team focused on cancer biology. KCRI is part of the Gundersen Health System, and is located on the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse campus. The Gundersen Health System is the Western Academic Campus of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and adjunct faculty appointments at UW-Madison at the appropriate rank may be arranged for suitably qualified candidates. Institute resources include: research laboratory space for cell and molecular biology, Ion Torrent S5 sequencing capability, Biobank with more than 15,000 cancer specimens, and a mouse research facility with in vivo imaging. Gundersen Medical Foundation provides additional academic assistance including access to grant writers, medical writers and biostatisticians. Collaborative engagement in translational cancer medicine and/or genomics with physicians in the Departments of Hematology/Oncology and Pathology at Gundersen Health System are strongly encouraged. Research in the Gundersen Medical Foundation is supported by both philanthropy and research grants. The ideal candidate may be an established group leader, or be embarking on their first faculty position but will have a PhD, MD or MD/PhD and several high quality publications in English-language journals. The applicant should include a 2-3 page Research Plan describing the candidate's initial goals. The Senior Research Scientist develops an independent cancer research program and directs the day-to-day project activity through supervision of technical personnel while gathering, analyzing and interpreting scientific data. Performs basic, clinical and/or translational research within specialty area while supporting Department of Medical Research and Kabara Cancer Research Institute initiatives. Contributes to the corporate mission to distinguish Gundersen Health System through excellence in education and research and to the vision to be nationally recognized as demonstrating the best healthcare to the patients and communities we serve. Job Responsibilities - Work in partnership with the Kabara Cancer Research Institute Director, Director of Medical Research and Medical Director of Research to plan and delineate Oncology Laboratory research priorities for Gundersen Health System. - Develop and maintain an efficient and innovative lab environment in order to conduct research projects by leading and providing training for a small team on procedures and protocols relating to complex scientific operations, analyses, and equipment. - Design, supervise and conduct complex research protocols related to Oncology and Hematology bench research, precision medicine, and patient outcomes. - Accountable for the operational decisions that directly affect the efficiency, costs and service quality in area of specialty. - Keep accurate laboratory records and take necessary steps to secure intellectual property patent protection on inventions made during the course of research work. - Facilitate an interdisciplinary/translational team approach in initiating and/or contributing to collaborative research conducted between Gundersen Health System scientific staff, physicians & fellows, University of Wisconsin faculty and students, and other partners. - . Contributes to the dissemination of knowledge gained through research by preparing and publishing findings in a timely manner and presenting findings in meetings with partners and at scientific conferences. - Secure external funding for Oncology and Hematology research projects through the submission of grants to both private and governmental sources. - Maintains knowledge of scientific technological developments that may assist in the completion of projects or lead to new products, processes, or procedures by reading current literature. - Assist with state and federal regulatory agency mandates/regulations. - Perform other job-related responsibilities as requested.
